Usually abbreviated to “ABI.” A description of bite force, not to be confused with bite frequency (bite threshold). How hard a dog bites and how often a dog bites are two independent variables in a dog’s brain. For ABI to be effective, it must be autonomous; that is to say it’s independent of the dog’s mood, or arousal level. Helping a dog learn to inhibit the force of their bite is paramount to coexisting with humans. It does appear that once puppies are past the socialization window, ABI can no longer be modified. There are not any known successful attempts to modify ABI in adult dogs.
