A mand is essentially a request. A child mands when the motivation is high for an item, activity or information. For example, a thirsty child says “water” while reaching for a cup of water. This would be considered a mand. For a dog, these would be what we would call automatic good behaviors. For example, when we teach a dog to sit when they want something from a person (instead of jumping, for example), each auto-sit would be considered a mand. Different manding behaviors are stupendous ways to cultivate etiquette and manners.
