In leash handling, tension on the leash is released instantaneously upon a change in the dog’s body mechanics. Additionally, the release is generous, removing all tension to the point of being slack. This is done by full movement of the arm(s). Timing and coincidental markers are important. Contrast with a Passive Release where tension is relieved solely by the dog’s own body movement; this is usually insufficient to wire in new behavior over time and so Active Releases (and markers) accelerate the process and while still providing a sense of agency for the dog.
