Systematically removing a training tool from a behavior. It is the process of transferring responsibility from yourself to your dog. This could entail the removal of any external reward or consequence. We do not want to be dependent on the tools. Thus, we fade food, and we fade any other training tools being used. A dog that will not perform without these cannot be called a well-trained dog.

There are specific strategies in place for fading. See our post on Fading Food Rewards for an introduction to part of this process.
