As we use this term at Simpawtico, “engagement” refers to sustained focus and attention from the dog. The dog’s social engagement systems are online (centered in the ventral vagal branch of the parasympathetic nervous system), and appetitive behaviors are observable. A dog in this attentive state is supremely easier to teach. We have a stronger relationship, and the dog is invested in the training process. This is the cornerstone of Simpawtico’s entire system. Engagement is the backbone of what we at Simpawtico call “spatial gravity.”
