Developing a dog’s kinesthesia with their relative position to their handler and simultaneously to any present leash tension. A Leash Savvy dog maintains a general position on a leash and will respond to slight changes in leash tension almost immediately. They are what we call “light on the leash.” Minimal (if any) prompting is required to initiate motion in any given direction. Developing good leash savvy is a necessary skill for polite walking on a leash and a prerequisite for solving many other behavioral puzzles. Although traditionally taught with leash pressure, we teach it with lots of reps, support, and freedom of choice.
