Categories: Nosework Terms

In scent detection, the dog believes that the odor is what’s producing the reward. The only way they can get a reward is to work until they reach a physical barrier. The dog believes that if they stay at the highest concentration of odor they’ll get a reward, and they’ll wait there until they get it. We don’t want the dog to work at the handler for a reward, and we don’t want them looking to the handler for help. We want independence and drive. This creates a Focused Response.
