Create a Good Grooming Client NOW

So you’ve just gotten a dog and you need to make a trip to the groomer. Now, you need to make sure your pup is a good grooming client. I’m here to help with that! First up, play with their feet. Nails will be a priority for your dog’s entire life. I always explain to my customers how important it is for their dogs to be comfortable with people touching their feet. 90% of the dogs that give me a problem do it when I attempt to clip or grind their nails.

When they’re lounging around with you, massage their feet and toes. Praise them for behaving while you’re doing this. Make sure everyone gets in on the action, family, friends, etc. Take any opportunity you can to touch and handle their feet.

Never, EVER, Play the “Foot Game.”

The foot game is when a person tries to grab the dog’s foot. When the dog pulls away, the game is on! This reinforces the idea that humans handling their feet is a bad thing. Humans (specifically your vet and your groomer) have lost the game, so to speak.

Doing these small things will make your groomer very happy and your dog much more comfortable with the grooming process.
