The Humane Hierarchy is a set of ethical considerations used to evaluate animal welfare methods and ensure that animals are treated humanely and respectfully. It outlines five levels of intervention that should be considered when working with animals: prevention, avoidance, minimization, refinement, and replacement. Each level of intervention seeks to minimize animal suffering and optimize their welfare as much as possible. This ethical framework can be used to assess the impact of various animal welfare policies and practices. The Humane Hierarchy was developed by noted behavior analyst, Susan Friedman, PhD.
