The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, suggests that the vagus nerve links together different aspects of our emotional and physiological regulation. This theory states that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) offers us two different paths for regulating distress in response to threats and safety. The first path is through the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), while the second is through the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and repair). The Polyvagal Theory proposes that we can learn to consciously access our vagal pathways to enhance health, resilience, and well-being.
