Neuroception is a concept developed by neuroscientist Stephen W. Porges that describes how the nervous system detects cues of safety and danger in the external environment, resulting in reactions and behaviors that keep an organism safe from harm. This theory focuses on how the body reacts to environmental changes and acts as a kind of “sixth sense” that helps identify danger or potential threats. Neuroception explains why we experience intense fear or anxiety when faced with an unfamiliar situation or feeling threatened—our bodies send signals to alert us to potential danger.
