The social engagement system, developed by Stephen W. Porges, is a theory that explains how we communicate and respond to others in social situations. This theory proposes that we have two systems for interacting with people—the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The SNS is responsible for activating fight-or-flight responses to dangerous situations, while the PNS calms us down and allows us to be more open and relaxed in social settings. With the help of neuroception, the social engagement system enables us to understand ourselves better and form better relationships with those around us.
