Tonic immobility is a state of physical and psychological paralysis in response to perceived threats. It is one of the components of the dorsal vagal state, which is associated with feelings of extreme fear and helplessness. This state can be triggered by traumatic events or situations that the individual perceives as life-threatening. When tonic immobility occurs, the individual experiences a deep sense of physical heaviness and an inability to move or defend themselves. This reaction can happen instantly or slowly over time, depending on the severity of the situation. In either case, it is thought to help protect the individual from further harm by protecting them from active aggression or escape danger if needed.
