Internal stress distribution locked into the body, remaining present even after external stressors have been removed. This is commonly associated with chronic stress and trauma. In small amounts, residual stress can create fatigue and impede learning; intense, continuous experiences can create a conditioned state. For example, in “old-school” methods where dogs were trained to lie down by stomping on choke chains, those dogs would later exhibit signs of stress when prompted to lie down, even if the corrective device was not present. The stress was “locked in,” as it were. While learning to cope with small amounts of stress is important, managing and minimizing stress overall (not just during training) is very important.
