An integral part of working with motivation is understanding how restraint works. Restraint tends to increase a dog’s drive to access something. When we’re working on activities like scent detection, for example, minimal restraint during practice can help build the drive to search. However, if we’re working with leash reactivity, restraint is precisely part of the problem we must work through. Each dog will respond to restraint differently depending on their genetics, experiences, and fluency with the training tools/methods. It’s something we need to understand and either utilize or work through.
