A powerful skill for a dog to learn. Essentially a dog learns to make contact with a specific body part onto a specific target in a specific context. This is the basis for Lure-Reward Training. Targeting can also be used to teach a dog to interact in a specific way with an object such as retrieval or Service work. Targeting is not a skill dogs are born with; they must be taught how to do it and they have to practice it to get proficient. At Simpawtico we mainly teach pet dogs how to target our hands and toys.
